It takes a lot of work to look like you just rolled out of bed and threw something on. You, like most women, probably have drawers and baskets of beauty products and hair-care potions. But are they good for you? Here are some beauty tips with a natural approach that will cut down on your drugstore bill and keep you looking and feeling fabulous.

Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

If ever there was a natural elixir, apple cider vinegar is it. This stuff does everything! Did you know that Helen of Troy used vinegar as a skin toner? You can do the same—and you don’t even need to hide it in a Trojan horse!

Just mix one part unfiltered apple cider vinegar with two parts distilled water. You can even add some essential oils for a non-vinegar smell. Shake and use cotton balls to apply after washing your face.

Homemade Facial Masks

Going to the spa for a facial is a real treat, but it can also be a real strain on your wallet. You can achieve some of the same skin-tightening and -brightening results with items you probably already have in your kitchen!

For a moisturizing mask, mix 1 egg yolk, 1tablespoon each of olive oil and honey, and½ cup oatmeal. After you’ve washed, apply the mixture to your face and let sit until dried, about 15–20 minutes. Remove with warm water and finish with toner and moisturizer.

The Many Benefits of Cornstarch

Cornstarch (or arrowroot) is found in most pantries, and it can be the base for many homemade beauty treatments. From deodorant to dry shampoo, you’ll get back to basics with these easy-to-make recipes.

Deodorant: Mix equal parts baking soda and cornstarch and add half as much melted coconut oil to create a spreadable “lotion” of sorts (it hardens a bit when it cools). Enhance with essential oils and keep in an airtight container. Apply directly to underarms, using fingers, after showering. Avoid all of those nasty chemicals and still stay fresh.

Facial powder: Start with a base of cornstarch and then add cocoa powder and cinnamon to achieve your desired color. (If you are very dark skinned, start with cocoa powder as your base.) Use a big fluffy brush to apply after your foundation, or even to bare skin. Bonus: it smells fabulous!

Dry shampoo: The same ingredients used in the facial powder can be used as dry shampoo, although brunettes will need to make it a bit darker. Put in a shaker bottle and apply to roots on the days you skip washing your hair. Comb or brush through.

Coconut Oil Beauty

Pantry-cousins apple cider vinegar and coconut oil have about as many uses outside of the kitchen as they do in it. Use coconut oil straight out of the jar as a moisturizer for face, skin, body, and hair. You can even use straight coconut oil as a face wash!

Oil pulls oil, so while you might feel it will be too much to put coconut oil directly on oily or combination skin, it actually does wonders. Massage the oil directly into the skin and then apply a hot-as-you-can-handle washcloth to the face and let it sit until cool. Remove the oil with the washcloth and tone and moisturize as you normally would.

Sandal-ready Feet

In Phoenix, we wear sandals nine months (or more!) out of the year, so you need feet you can be proud to show off. Mix 1 tablespoon honey, 1–2 tablespoons milk, and the juice of half an orange. Massage this mixture onto cracked heels and feet, put on cotton socks, and go to bed. Rinse off in the shower in the morning.

Simple Remedies

Some other easy-to-do beauty tricks to add to your routine:

  • Massage a banana skin on your face for two minutes and then lie down with the peel on for up to 15 minutes for added moisture.
  • Add volume to eyelashes with aloe vera gel or petroleum jelly.
  • Massage almond oil into the skin around your eyes before bed to lighten those dark circles the next morning.
