Don’t you wish there were a magic pill you could take to help you achieve your goals in life? A pill for increased brainpower or a pill for instant weight loss would be awesome. Unfortunately, technology hasn’t provided us with these easy solutions—at least not yet.

However, there might be something that will help you meet your weight-loss goals that’s easy to find, easy to take, and quick to drive results. And it’s closer than you think.

The Power of Water

According to a recent scientific study, increased water consumption was associated with decreased caloric intake and increased lipolysis, the breakdown of fats by hydrolysis. Although conducted primarily on rodents, scientists believe there is viability in extrapolatingthe findings to humans.

In addition to these findings, the reverse seems to also be true: a lower water intake can result in weight gain.

The reason? Like most things with weight regulation, it goes back to hormones. Angiotensin II(AngII), the principal hormone of body-fluid regulation, stimulates thirst, an appetite for sodium, the release of an antidiuretic hormone, and vasoconstriction. However, chronically elevated AngII has been related to chronic diseases in humans—and that higher level of the hormone is usually related to being dehydrated.

Why Are So Many of Us Dehydrated?

With all of the options for beverages surrounding us daily, we tend to leave water as a last choice. And that’s too bad because water is an amazing addition to the human diet. But according to this study, people don’t drink water because they don’t like the taste, they aren’t aware of the benefits, or they are afraid they’ll have to use the restroom too frequently.

Especially living in Arizona, we need to have a LOT of water. You’ve probably heard that 8–10 glasses (that’s 8 ounces in each glass) are what you should be drinking each day. That’s a great guideline, but remember that it is just a guideline. The more you sweat, the more water you need. The hotter it is, the more water you need.

Bottom line: If you’re not drinking enough water each day, the chances are that you’re dehydrated, and that’s not good for your body.

Benefits of Drinking Water

When you drink water, you are feeding your body. We are made mostly of water (nearly 60%), and that fluid is needed to lubricate our cells, muscles, and bones. You can live a lot longer without food than you can without water. Unfortunately, many of us are starving our bodies every day.

When you drink enough water, you help your body better follow its hunger cues. In fact, when you feel hungry, you might actually just be thirsty. Experts suggest drinking a full glass of water just prior to eating to be fuller when the food arrives.

More than just supporting your diet, being adequately hydrated is important for your entire wellbeing. Here are just a few benefits of drinking your daily eight glasses:

  • Water is the original energy drink, fueling muscles during exercise.
  • Adequate hydration keeps the skin clear by flushing out toxins.
  • Your kidneys work hard to clean waste from the body, and clear liquids (i.e., water) aid in that function.
  • Have a hangover? Water is a great way to rehydrate after drinking a little too much.

Easy Ways to Increase Your Water Intake

Eight glasses of water might seem like a lot for someone who doesn’t drink much water now, but you might be surprised how easy it is to increase your water intake.

If you’re in one place most of the day (home, work, or school), carry a reusable, refillable water bottle with you. Keep ice and water in it at all times, and make a habit to refill it at breaks and lunch.

Drinking enough water can be more challenging when you’re on the go, but it’s certainly not impossible. You can still carry your water bottle with you or even keep a small cooler in the car with water bottles that are cold and ready to drink. All restaurants offer ice water for free, and you can even get a venti water at Starbucks for no money.

If you’re one of those people who just doesn’t like the taste of water, the easiest way to make it more exciting is to add a little flavor. You can grab an infusion bottle, which has a special filter for fruits and herbs. Experiment with flavors. Citrus, mint, and berries are all excellent in water. You can even try a flavored water enhancer, such as MIO, but be careful of added calories and sugar; the whole goal is to get the calorie-free benefits of water.
