I’m just like the rest of us, there are days where my goals seem very doable and attainable and there are days that I have to use every ounce of energy in my body to not fall of the wagon. And sometimes, no matter what I do, I still fall off.

Rather than feel defeated, I simply accept that there will be easy days and hard days, but what really matters in my willingness to start again and not judge myself for the missteps of yesterday.

I think the VERY best way to have iron clad will power and not fall off the wagon is to ensure you set goals that won’t make you fall of the wagon. I’m not saying don’t push or stretch yourself but all too often people try to go from zero to hero. It’s unrealistic and you set yourself up for failure if you haven’t eaten well or worked out for years and then promise yourself to turn over a new leaf tomorrow and change everything you do.

We’ve all heard of SMART goals, and there is a reason, they work and make sense.

S: Special goal. If you are too broad it’s hard to track and to actually see if you achieved it or not.

M: Measureable. If you can’t measure it, you don’t know if you hit it!

A: Action Oriented. I love to make a promise to myself to “do” something for a certain amount of time rather than say I will “lose 10 pounds.” We often aren’t 100% in control of the outcome, but you bet I am the only person in charge of ensuring I eat a certain way or do a certain activity that will help me achieve my goal.

R: Realistic. If you have 150 pounds to drop, don’t say I’ll get there in 6 months. Find a plan and commit to activities that can help you reach our goals safely and effectively.

T: Timeframe. Give yourself a timeframe to complete the goal. Sometimes breaking it down into several little achievable goals can be helpful.
