Self-care for Men: Guys Need Pampering Too
We are living in an age of instant. We expect answers now and results immediately. This can create an incredible amount of stress. Whether at home with the kids or at work with deadlines, life can sometimes be overwhelming. And women aren’t the only ones dealing with stress; men can experience just as much or more. For our beloved husbands, brothers, dads, and male friends, it’s time to prioritize some self-care for men.
Men Deserve Equal Time at the Spa
When women get overwhelmed, they gather their girlfriends and head to the spa. Men, on the other hand, seem to grab a beer and watch a ballgame. Of course, while it may be relaxing, that’s not the same as getting a massage, facial, or pedicure.
It’s time for men to get the pampering and self-care they deserve with no stigma or judgment. It is absolutely masculine and sexy for a man to take care of himself. And it doesn’t mean you’re conceited or self-centered. For goodness’ sake, don’t even think about calling yourself metrosexual or some other derogatory term. Men who take care of themselves should be supported. (Besides, the women love it.)
How Will You Make Time for Yourself?
Well, there’s the rub. Sure, in theory it’s great to champion self-care for men, but in reality, who has the time? Even in the 21st century, most men are the breadwinners of the family. It’s only biological that men are programmed to provide and protect, and they do this by working to create financial security.
Thankfully for their families, most men carry the burden without complaint. After all, if it’s not considered masculine to take time to pamper yourself. But late nights working turn into poor eating habits and low-quality sleep. At home, dads are expected to take over and be involved with the kids, which while fun, can be stressful in its own way.
Unfortunately, most men don’t have a way to let off that steam other than maybe at the gym or on the golf course. Wouldn’t a little self-care provide a great solution?
Start with Small Steps
There’s no need to rush off to a day spa. Well, unless you want to. Self-care for men can start with small steps. Take a walk during your lunch break. Skip the drive-through for lunch and treat yourself to a sit-down salad. Turn off your phone and computer for an hour this evening and devote 100% of your attention to something you love. Read the newspaper the whole way through.
If you’re ready to step it up a notch, perhaps a cut and shave at a local barber are in order. That’s a small bit of pampering that will make you feel great. Or schedule a one-hour massage. Surely you can get away for that long to pay some attention to yourself.
