How to Get Past Your Weight-loss Plateau
We’ve all been there: You’re working out diligently, watching what you eat, and making progress toward your weight-loss goals. Then, inexplicably, everything comes to a screeching halt. Nothing has changed in your routine, yet the scale isn’t moving at all. You’ve reached a plateau. So what do you do now?
There’s nothing worse than working hard to achieve a milestone yet not being able to get there. The good news is that if you stay focused and keep working out and eating right, in about three to four weeks, the scale will start to move again. In the interim, however, you will likely see changes in your physique, even if you stop losing weight. Your arms, legs, and abs will look tighter and more defined as your body starts to transform. Switch Things Up
Once you resume moving the scale a bit, you may notice that it isn’t going down as quickly as it was before. That’s because your plateau was a signal your body has gotten used to the routine you developed. It may be time to switch things up.
Try changing your diet. If you can shave 100–300 calories each day (without going below 1,000 calories total), that may make a difference. Also, look at what you’re eating. Carbs can wreak havoc on some people’s progress, so a low-carb, Paleo-style approach may be just what the doctor ordered. Evaluate how you’re breaking up your intake too, mixing up your protein, fat, and carbs. Going back to basics of veggies and protein may kickstart your system.
If making tweaks to your diet isn’t enough, reexamine your workout. Maybe you need a different cardio to weight training ratio. Or maybe you need to change up what you’re doing and add a hike, run, or bike ride to your regular gym routine. Also be sure to add in days off so your body has time to repair the muscles that were torn during your workout, which is when the magic happens.
See Your Doctor
There’s a possibility that if nothing seems to be working, you may looking at a hormonal change, thyroid imbalance, or insulin resistance. If you’re doing all that you should be doing, it might be time to make a visit to the doctor to run some blood tests and make sure everything is working as it should be.
